Aperghis started relatively late to work with the naked, unalienated piano sound – the results are all the more concentrated. Nicholas Hodges has been summing up the pieces since 1997: he emphasizes the clarity, the sharp lines, the luminosity of the colors. He turns graceful movement into frenzy and back again. He lets rhythms and harmonies tumble wildly, or he lets them slowly melt away as in the subtle "Pièce pour jeunes pianistes". As a bonus track, he presents an early work, "Simata", newly alienated with a ring modulator: vacillating between an aggressive techno sound and a romanticism dissolved in acid.
